History of Semi-Cursive Script

Eastern Jin — Wang Xizhi (303–361). Semi-cursive script sits between regular and cursive: characters may join, but each stays recognizable. It was born in the Eastern Jin dynasty and perfected by Wang Xizhi, whose Lanting Xu — written at a spring gathering of poets in 353 AD — is called the "Number One Running Script Under Heaven" (天下第一行书).

Legend says Wang wrote the Lanting Xu while slightly drunk, then tried repeatedly to copy it and failed — the original was so alive it could not be reproduced. Tang emperor Taizong treasured it so much he had it buried with him.

Xingshu is the script Chinese people actually write by hand for letters, inscriptions and art — flowing, personal and full of movement.

Masterwork: The Lanting Xu (兰亭集序, 353 AD) — 324 characters in 28 lines — is the most famous calligraphy in Chinese culture.

Formal Features of Semi-Cursive Script

• Characters in motion. Strokes flow into one another with visible energy; the brush rarely lifts, so the whole line reads as one continuous breath.
• Sizes and angles vary. Unlike regular script's even grid, running script characters tilt, shrink and swell — the rhythm of the line, not the grid, rules the page.
